ACER HAST Preparation

The ACER Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) is used by Victorian government schools with SEAL programs and selective entry pathways. It helps schools identify students with strong reasoning abilities and academic potential for accelerated learning programs at Year 7.

The HAST is designed to assess how well students think and reason, rather than testing what they have memorised. With thoughtful preparation, students can approach the test feeling confident and well prepared.

What does the ACER HAST cover?

The HAST consists of four components, each designed to assess a different aspect of academic reasoning and ability.

~30 minutes
Mathematical Reasoning
Tests the ability to think logically with numbers and mathematical concepts. Questions go beyond routine calculations — students need to analyse problems, identify patterns, and apply reasoning to unfamiliar scenarios.
~30 minutes
Reading Comprehension
Evaluates how well students understand, interpret, and analyse written passages. Questions cover literal comprehension, inference, author’s purpose, and critical evaluation across a range of text types.
~30 minutes
Abstract Reasoning
Assesses non-verbal reasoning through visual pattern recognition. Students identify relationships, sequences, and transformations in shapes and figures — testing reasoning ability independent of language or prior knowledge.
~30 minutes
Written Expression
A writing task that assesses the ability to organise ideas, communicate clearly, and write with appropriate structure, vocabulary, and grammar under timed conditions.

How PrepHQ helps you prepare

We believe learning should feel good. PrepHQ gives students the tools to build genuine understanding and confidence — not just memorise answers.

Targeted practice tests

Practise with questions aligned to the HAST format across Mathematical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Abstract Reasoning, and Written Expression. Each test adapts to focus on areas where your child needs the most support.

Detailed explanations

Every question comes with a clear, step-by-step explanation so students don't just learn what the right answer is — they understand why.

Progress tracking

See how skills develop over time with clear performance insights. Identify strengths and areas for improvement at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ACER HAST?

The ACER HAST (Higher Ability Selection Test) is an academic assessment developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research. It is used by Victorian government schools with SEAL (Select Entry Accelerated Learning) programs and other selective entry pathways to identify students with strong academic potential for Year 7 entry.

Which Victorian schools use the ACER HAST?

Victorian government schools with SEAL programs use the HAST for selective entry. Schools include Balwyn High School, Melbourne High School, Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, Nossal High School, Suzanne Cory High School, and others offering accelerated learning programs.

What subjects are tested in the ACER HAST?

The ACER HAST typically assesses four areas: Mathematical Reasoning (problem solving and logical thinking with numbers), Reading Comprehension (understanding and analysing written texts), Abstract Reasoning (identifying patterns and relationships in visual sequences), and Written Expression (communicating ideas clearly in writing).

How is the HAST different from the ACER scholarship test?

The ACER scholarship test is used by private schools for academic scholarships and covers Humanities, Mathematics, and Written Expression. The HAST is used by government schools for selective entry and SEAL programs, and includes Mathematical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Abstract Reasoning, and Written Expression. The HAST places more emphasis on reasoning ability, while the scholarship test focuses more on subject knowledge.

How can I prepare for the ACER HAST?

Effective preparation involves building reasoning skills across all four test areas. Practise identifying patterns in abstract sequences, solving mathematical problems that require logical thinking, reading and analysing various text types, and writing clearly under timed conditions. PrepHQ offers structured practice tests aligned with the HAST format to help students prepare with confidence.
